On Wednesday, December 22, 2010, I received a great surprise from a few of the families of the boys that I coach and work with on Baseball skills. It was just another evening that I looked forward to working with Nick Ramirez who is developing into an awesome hitter, and I also had the pleasure of meeting another young man that may play for me in the summer time. We focused on hitting left handed all session. Mind you these boys are only 13 years old.

When the session was over, Mr. Ramirez who is one of the greatest men that I know in Rio Rancho, NM and his wife presented me this gift basket. Of course I was stunned with surprise. Never would I expect gifts or money for working with boys to help them play baseball better. So many emotions came up, but I stayed cool and thanked them for what they had done.

I could not wait to get home and share this honor with my wife. I was so proud to receive such an honor an even prouder of the people who thought enough of me to go out of their way to consider me. The first thing I did was take a photo, which you see above. Secondly, my wife and I began to look through the cellophane wrap at the goodies inside. While I won't list everything, it had my favorites. Sunflower seeds, line up cards, a fancy baseball clipboard, a pitch counter, gift certificates for fine dining establishments, chocolate and a fine beverage.

After just taking in the love that was shown through the gift, I placed it under our Christmas tree. I am just so thankful for the boys and their families and the opportunity to share my love of the game.

God is good all the time, and I pray that he continues to bless the boys, their families and the time we come together to work on Baseball skills.

Outfield Projects

Jeremy Barfield is a big, strong right fielder who has every tool except speed. Barfield has only hit six home runs this year, and he needs to tap more into his massive raw power. He’s already shown a good contact stroke and decent plate discipline, and his outfield defense is good. The offensive bar for right fielders is set pretty high, and to reach it, Barfield will need to maximize his power.

Matt Spencer is a powerful outfielder acquired along with Cardenas and Josh Outman in the Joe Blanton trade last July. Spencer ripped apart the Cal League last summer and this spring, but he’s found the Texas League a bit more challenging (.268/.298/.415). His defense isn’t very good, and he fits best at left field or first base.

Spencer is only 23, so he has another year or two to figure out how to improve his poor plate discipline, which is his biggest problem at the plate. Right now, he projects as a .260/.310/.460 hitter; if he can raise that projected OBP 40 points, he’ll have a future, and if he can’t, he won’t.

Archie Gilbert is 26 and still in Double-A; in fact, he’s only in his first year at the level. While his raw speed, plate discipline, and contact are excellent, he has an utter lack of power, which handicaps him (.066 ISO this year).

Gilbert also doesn’t use his speed well: He gets caught too often on steal attempts (his steal percentages are usually in the 60s) and takes bad routes in the outfield. His defensive issues make him a marginal center fielder.

With quick improvements in power, baserunning, and defense, Gilbert could be a fourth outfielder, similar to current A’s fourth outfielder Rajai Davis. If not, he won’t last much longer.

Tyreace House makes Gilbert (and Rajai Davis) look slow; he may be the fastest player in the minor leagues. The A’s sixth-rounder in 2008, House can get from the right side of the plate to first in 3.8 seconds, and he was a track star in high school. House also shows good plate discipline.

Still far away from the majors in short-season Vancouver, House needs to work on adding some power. With his speed and solid approach, he doesn’t need to have game-breaking power or anything, but his .015 ISO in Rookie ball last year won’t cut it; he has one career extra-base hit in 115 ABs. The 21-year-old also plays a good center field and has leadoff potential if he can hit .290 and slug .370.

East Bay to induct six more into HOF

On May 15 the Cal State East Bay Pioneers will welcome six more into its exclusive athletic Hall of Fame.

Cal State East Bay athletic director Debby De Angelis announced on Tuesday, Feb. 9, that five former standout athletes and one coach will be honored at the Hall of Fame reception and dinner.

The six inductees will join the ranks of such Pioneer legends like Major League Baseball hall-of-famer Joe Morgan, former New York Mets catcher Jay Kleven, track and field and cross-country star Michele Aubuchon and three-time Olympian Marilyn King.

Along with inducting the select six into the Hall of Fame, East Bay will also honor the 1988 National Champion women's soccer team at the reception.

Volleyball- and softball-star Angel Alcorcha, baseball player Archie Gilbert, track and field athletes Miloe McCall and Darryl Robinson, women's basketball player Leah (Thornton) Pero, and men's and women's soccer coach Colin Lindores will all be honored and inducted to the East Bay Athletic Hall of Fame on May 15.

Alcorcha (1996-99) played for two years on the women's volleyball team and pitched for two seasons on the softball team.

On the volleyball court, she was a two-time All-Nor Cal Athletic Conference (NCAC) First Team selection as an outside hitter, leading the then-Cal State Hayward Lady Pioneers in hitting percentage and led them to a 20-13 overall record in her first year, followed by guiding them to a 24-9 record the following season, including an 11-match win streak in that 1997 season.

On the softball diamond, Alcorcha earned NCAA All-West Region First Team honors in 1998 and led the Lady Pioneers softball team to second place in the Cal-Pac Conference in her senior year in 1998.

"Angel was a leader in every sense of the word," said Lady Pioneers volleyball coach Jim Spagle. "She always made herself available to her team, whether to help a teammate through a rough stretch, challenge them or to demonstrate the standard of maximum effort which she always exhibited on and off the court."

Archie Gilbert (2002-05) hit a career .358 in his four seasons as a Pioneer. The former Division III Independent First Team selection carved his name into the East Bay baseball books as one of the best to play for the Pioneers. He holds the career records for runs, hits, RBIs, doubles and triples. The James Logan alum also ranks second in Pioneers baseball history in home runs with 26 and is in the top 10 in walks, stolen bases and batting average.

Gilbert was signed by the Boston Red Sox in 2005, playing in the Gulf Coast League for the GCL Red Sox in 2005, then played in the Pioneer League with the Chicago White Sox organization in 2006 before being called up to Class-A ball with the White Sox in Kannapolis in 2007.

Gilbert has been working his way up the Oakland Athletics system since 2008, winning the California League MVP with Single-A affiliate Stockton Ports in '08, then helping Class-AA affiliate Midland Rockhounds win the '09 Texas League Championship.

Gilbert has hit .286 with 21 home runs and 170 RBI along with totaling 134 stolen bases in his five-year minor-league career.

"From the moment Archie stepped on the field as a freshman for his first game in a Pioneer uniform everyone noticed this is a young man who is a game changer," CSUEB baseball coach Dirk Morrison said. "He is a player that makes plays that no one else makes, runs the bases with fierce determination and constantly hits the ball with authority."

A four-time NCAA Division II national qualifier and two-time high jump All-American Miloe McCall (1983-87) was dominant in her four years for East Bay. She captured four consecutive NCAC in the triple jump, setting a school record jump of 40-11.5 and earned All-American honors in 1986 and 1987 as she finished fourth in the NCAA Championships.

"Miloe's consistent performance in the field events over her four-year career was a key reason for the continual success of the Cal State East Bay women's track and field teams of that era," nominator Glenn Park stated in a letter.

On the men's side of the track, Darryl Robinson (1976-77) was a two-time All-American on East Bay's track and field team. In his junior year in '76, he set school records in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault events, claiming the Far West Conference championship before finishing second in the NCAA Division II championships.

Robinson followed his stellar junior season with a spectacular senior season, defending his FWC title while leading East Bay to another second-place finish in the NCAA Championships.

Leah Pero (2002-05) played on the women's basketball team for three season under coach Sara Judd, leading the Pioneers to 59 wins in her three season there as a guard.

Pero, a three-time All-Cal Pac Conference honoree, holds the Lady Pioneers season records for scoring average, free throws, free-throw percentage and consecutive free-throws made in her senior season. She also led East Bay to back-to-back 21-win seasons.

Pero was also named an NAIA Second Team All-American her senior year, Cal-Pac MVP, along with being a two-time national scholar-athlete. She collected the NAIA's Emil S. Liston award as a junior for displaying scholarship, character and playing ability.

"Leah was a coach's dream," Judd said. "She was extremely talented on the court and dedicated in the classroom and to her teammates. She was at her best against the strongest competition and no one ever played the game with as much joy as she did."

Pioneers soccer coach Colin Lindores coached the men's team from 1976-89, then coached to the women's side from 1982-1989. He also had a second stint with the Lady Pioneers from 1997-98.

He went 117-54-12 in 11 seasons as the women's head coach, compiling a .672 winning percentage, the best in the program's history. He led the Lady Pioneers to six straight NCAC titles, and the 1988 NCAA Division II National Championship. He was also a five-time NCAC Coach of the Year.

On the men's side, Lindores amassed a 146-86-36 record in his 14-year career, leading the Pioneers seven NCAC titles, five NCAA Tournament berths and a Division II Final Four appearance in 1989. Along with being a three-time NCAC Coach of the Year, he was named the NSCAA Far West Coach of the Year, leading two East Bay teams that, for several years, did not have any scholarship athletes.

Lindores went on to coach for six years at Stanford, leading the Cardinal to two NCAA Tournament appearances, then served as an assistant coach for Team USA in the 1991 Pan-Am games and in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. He has been the co-head coach at De Anza College in Cupertino, leading the Dons to four Coast Conference titles.

"No single coach in the history of this university has been more successful than Colin Lindores," said former East Bay athletic director Al Mathews in his recommendation letter.

Belizean rapper Moses Leviy – also known as Jamal Shyne Barrow - today signed a multimillion dollar recording contract with Gangland Records, a subsidiary of Island/Def Jam. The signing took place this evening inside Shyne’s penthouse at the Renaissance Tower. The signatories were Shyne and L.A. Reid – the Chairman of Island Def Jam Records. It is big news not only because of the signing but also the presence of Reid. He is one of the most powerful music executives in the United States – having signed artists ranging from Mariah Carey to Outkast. Well today he signed Shyne. Keith Swift was at the airport and has the story.

Island Def Jam boss L.A. Reid arrived at the Phillip Goldson International Airport at 4:20 this afternoon on his private jet. The California Highway Patrol said Tuesday night’s deadly highway shooting of a Vallejo man was a random act of violence.”What’s very disheartening is someone has clearly shown a wanton disregard for human life, and it’s imperative that we find them as quickly as possible,” said Sgt. Trent Cross, Solano County’s CHP spokesman.

Dewey Tucker, 24, was shot at about 9:50 p.m. as he drove west on Interstate 80, just west of Cummings Skyway between Crockett and Hercules, Cross said.

Officers responded to reports of a single-vehicle crash when a witness saw a white Nissan Sentra strike the center divide, then the guardrail of westbound I-80, Cross said.
Another motorist stopped at the car and reported that Tucker and the vehicle appeared to have been shot multiple times, Cross said.

The Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office said Tucker was shot in the head. Tucker has a clean criminal record with no known gang affiliations, Cross said. “He was leaving his home in Vallejo and was heading to Oakland for band practice,” Cross said, adding that a guitar was found in his vehicle. Investigators believe a semi-automatic handgun was used in the attack and that the shooter or shooters also were driving west on I-80, he said. CHP officers are investigating leads, though no suspects have been announced or arrested, Cross said.

Several lanes were closed overnight Tuesday as CHP officials worked the site, Cross said. “We’re just asking for the public’s help in helping us find the suspect,” Cross said.via

Be Careful Who You Love by Diane Dimond

After MJ's death, I like many other people rushed to read anything we could about our icon. This was the only book left in our library system, so I reserved it and checked it out. I would say this book is shocking, informative, chilling, etc. I would say read it. Michael was a genius entertainment wise, but privately, is where this story gets interesting.

This was the spot back in the day, where all the students hung out, ate. When I started it was the girls dormitory. So every Lexus was parked out front trying to impress the girls. Brothas like myself didn't have nothing but our feet and a Marta pass.

This is the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA where Alpha Men mentored the children. I spent a lot of time in that building. Until now, I have never really tripped on how the children that I worked with are doing now. Who would know that I would go on to work eight years in education.

This yard used to be so full of life. It was hard to imagine how empty it has now become. I pray that Morris Brown will rise one day

This is the bridge. I have to put up another photo that I took when I was in school here. I was much younger and slimmer back then. We used to have a photographer named Spurge who used to take photos for two dollars back then. He was such a cool guy. I want to get in contact with him. Somebody hook me up.

Fountain Hall is where I took so many of my classes. I really grew as a young man and a student in this building do to the instructors that I had. I can't believe this builidng isn't buzzing with activity.

This is the Morris Brown Song. We had to memorize this in our Freshman Orientation Class.

Finally on the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. plot. It was a long journey, but I made it home! A Phiiiiiiiii!!!!!! The Alphas were the first brothers to help me transition on the campus. They looked out for me and treated me with respect and for that I will always be grateful. I guess they impacted me in how I would eventually treat others that I met.

Morris Brown College founded in 1881 by ex-slaves. How could we let an institution like this perish. I pray the Lord will bless this place and make it better than ever.

On Saturday, 15-year-old Kimberly Anyadike finished a record-breaking flight across the country, becoming what is believed to be the youngest African-American female to pilot an airplane from coast to coast. The adventurous teenager flew from Compton Woodley Airport in Compton, CA, to Newport News, VA ,and back, making thirteen stops along the way. Her flight companions were an adult safety pilot and Levi Thornhill, an 87-year-old World War II veteran who flew with the Tuskegee Airmen, an all African-American combat unit in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Part of the reason for Anyadike's voyage was to honor the Tuskegee Airmen, dozens of whom she met throughout the journey.

Anyadike learned to fly both an airplane and a helicopter at Tomorrow's Aeronautical Museum in Compton in an after-school program that offers aviation lessons to underprivileged and at-risk youth. The museum owns the plane she flew on this historical trip.

It was Anyadike's idea to fly cross-country. She knew it would take tremendous preparation, but she felt strongly that she could do it. The Tuskegee Airmen served as further motivation for the high-flying teen.

"They left such a great legacy," she said. "I had big shoes to fill. All they wanted to do was to be patriots for this country. They were told no, that they were stupid, that they didn't have cognitive development to fly planes. They didn't listen. They just did what they wanted to do."'
Robin Petgrave, the aeronautical museum's founder tried to temper Anyadike's enthusiasm. "I told her it was going to be a daunting task but she just said, 'Put it on. I got big shoulders.' "

Former NFL quarterback Steve McNair has been shot and killed.
Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron confirmed that police were called to a residence and found McNair and a woman shot to death inside. Aaron said authorities don’t yet know the circumstances of the shooting.

“I don’t have any answers for you now as to what’s happened, who’s responsible,” he said.

Aaron said police have tentatively identified the woman but did not release her name.

McNair played 13 seasons in the NFL and led the Titans within a yard of forcing overtime in the 2000 Super Bowl. The former third overall draft pick also played for the Baltimore Ravens before retiring after the 2007 season.

“He was one of the finest players to play for our organization and one of the most beloved players by our fans,” Titans owner Bud Adams said in a statement. “He played with unquestioned heart and leadership and led us to places that we had never reached, including our only Super Bowl.”

The legendary Apollo Theater will honor fallen icon Michael Jackson with a special series of events commemorating his life.

The first event begins on Tuesday (June 30).

The venue will host a public tribute allowing fans to hear DJs spinning Michael’s music, leave memorabilia, and write sympathy messages on a special mural wall located outside the property.

Reverend Al Sharpton will start the event with a eulogy at 2PM. Fans will be allowed access in 600-person cycles.

Apollo CEO Jonelle Procope expects the gathering to be emotional, but hopes the visible representation of Michael’s accolades with assist the community in healing.

“Michael first performed at the Apollo in the late 1960s with his brothers and won Amateur Night, which catapulted their career as the Jackson 5. We will always remember Michael in our hearts as part of the Apollo’s family of artists and a true Apollo legend. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. He will be deeply missed,” Procope told AllHipHop.com in a statement. “From the moment the news of his passing was made public, fans began gathering at the Apollo to pay their respects and celebrate Michael’s life. We at the Apollo thought it was important to put these events together to give Michael’s fans the chance to remember him as the consummate entertainer that he was.”

The June 30 event will also feature a 30-minute tribute video, and run until 8:30PM.

The celebration officially ends the following evening (July 1) with the Harlem venue’s famed Amateur Night.

On that Wednesday night, fans will celebrate together with dance contests focused on replicating the King of Pop’s signature moves.

Today, those in the downtown Los Angeles area can visit the Grammy Museum (800 W Olympic Blvd) to see the redesigned “Michael Jackson: HIStyle” exhibit.

The newly reopened showcase displays many of the signature items of Jackson’s wardrobe such at the white suit worn on the cover of Thriller, music’s best-selling album of all time.

The Grammy exhibit is located on the third floor and opens today at 11:30AM.

In related news, BET Awards executive producer Stephen Hill has confirmed that this Sunday’s (June 28) broadcast will now be a telecast to honor the memory of Michael Jackson.

Hill clarified that the BET Awards will extensively showcase Jackson’s remarkable contributions to music and pop culture over the last four decades.

The BET Awards will be hosted by Jamie Foxx. Stars Beyonce, Maxwell, Ne-Yo, and Wyclef Jean have all signed on to assist in a last-minute tribute, which airs Sunday at 8PM.

It was evident last night as Manny single handedly sold out the Albuquerque Isoptopes Ball Park. Not only last night, but every night that he will be here. Nothing but standing room only.

Manny's presence electrified the crowd. Some had signs that were anti-Manny, but most where there to see a World Series Champion and one of the best hitters the game has ever produced.

Tonight, the legendary baseball player Manny Ramirez will don a Albuquerque Isotopes (Triple A Affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers) Uniform. He will be playing as he prepares to rejoin the Los Angeles Dodgers after his 50 game suspension.

The buzz around Manny playing here, has created a demand for tickets never seen before in Albuquerque. I went to get mine today, and the only ticket I could get for tonight is on the "Berm", which is the grassy area behind the right field wall. I'll take it.

I was able to get a ticket down the Left Field Line for tomorrow nights game though. That was a come up. Hopefully, Manny will get a few AB's and play a little Left Field, so I can get a few photos to show you.

No matter what Manny was accused of, he is still for my money, one of the best ball players today. You never know what he will do next, but you can bet it will be good.

Louisiana State University's Tigers Baseball Team, plays the Texas Longhorns in the 3 game final series for the 2009 College World Series Championship, in Omaha, Nebraska.

The first game will be played today at 5 p.m. I am especially rooting for the Tigers, because of a player named Derek Helenihi. I had the pleasure of coaching this young man a few years ago, while he was in high school, and to know that he is on the brink of becoming a champion college baseball player, means a lot to me. It would be nice to say that I have a player who won a College World Series.

Now the Texas Longhorns are no easy push over. They have been here before. However, I believe that LSU has been playing great baseball, sweeping all of their opponents thus far in the tournament.

So tune in, and root, root, root, for the Tigers, if they don't win it's a shame....
